About the 2011 Writers Retreat Weekend
Twelve writers migrated north to a cabin—that is if you call a 4-story 6 bedroom, 5 bathroom house a cabin—for a weekend writing retreat. The first few hours on Friday as members drifted in were spent figuring out where to go, up or down, right or left. And where were those stairs exactly? With three living room areas and two kitchens getting oriented was a bit of a challenge which everyone mastered before the end of the weekend.
Friday afternoon kick off was a viewing of the video, “Writing Romantic Comedies and Love Stories,” by Michael Hauge which reminded us of the essential principles for writing believable and emotionally fulfilling romantic relationships.
When our stomachs started grumbling we headed to the restaurant for dinner. Hard to believe anyone could have been hungry with all the snacks that people brought which could easily sustain the whole group through a three-day blizzard.
On Saturday we took two hours to start our 2012 group project: working our way through Susan May Warren’s book, “Deep and Wide—Advanced Fiction Writing Techniques for Making Your Characters Deeper and Your Plot Wider.” We managed to fire up the mental neurons and get to page 18. By the afternoon some people needed a long walk in the fall sunshine and some needed quiet time and a nap. Our perfect surroundings easily accommodated everyone.
Sunday was our business meeting and wrap-up before heading back to home and reality. The weekend was a great way to spend quality time with fellow writers, talk plots, plan murders and trysts, and help friends change the direction of their WIPs.
